The Des Moines Marina Steps create a vital pedestrian connection and public view corridor from the downtown core to the marina floor. Through a park like setting which embraces Pacific Northwest culture and environment, a
central stair connects 223rd to the waterfront, flanked by accessible walkways, places to pause and enjoy the view, and a central plaza for seasonal events and everyday use. Together with the proposed 223rd Green Street, the Steps envision a welcoming downtown core and set the stage for future economic development through this physical connection to the Marina with quality public open space, celebrating the movement of water and people to form a new, energized heart of the Marina District.
Project elements may include, overlooks, spots for rest or gathering, stairs and accessible walkways, water quality storm water gardens, art, native and adapted PNW plant palettes, pedestrian scale lighting, naturalized play spaces, and a plaza at the Marina Floor.
